Cycling Tour of Historic East End District: Art Murals & Installations
By Teresa Biggar, Event Leader
The East End District of Houston celebrates its rich history through public art along Harrisburg & Navigation Boulevards, and the streets in between. The most visible are the murals on buildings of many businesses. However, a keen eye will spot the artwork on bus and rail shelters, mail and electrical boxes, light fixtures and more! Local artists and students worked with local businesses and the City of Houston to create this colorful storytelling of the East End culture.
I toured this beautiful district with fellow Member Cyclists Carolyn & Monika last Saturday while the weather was cool and sunny. We rode from Carolyn’s house, which is near the White Oak Bayou Hike and Bike Trail. There were plenty of people walking, jogging and cycling, but it was an easy ride into downtown. There were few people once we left the trail and navigated through downtown.
TIPS FOR TOURING THE EAST END DISTRICT:
- There is no shade so wear a hat and sunscreen — this will take about 2–3 hours with lots of stops.
- Bring at least 2 liters of water & a snack (salty & sweet).
- If you cycle, make sure everything you bring is secured — there are a few bumpy sections.
- Plan on a wandering route for exploring art off the boulevards.
- Bring some money in case you want to get a cold beer or margarita at the Original Ninfa’s on Navigation!
- Take some time to cut into the neighborhoods and enjoy the old cottages of historic Second Ward — many are being removed for new town homes
