Hiking the Lone Star Hiking Trail
The Lone Star Hiking Trail (LSHT), recognized as the longest continuous wilderness footpath in Texas, is just an hour north of Houston, and is the perfect place for you to get those extra steps needed to win your weekend challenge! Cutting through the Sam Houston National Forest and running alongside Lake Conroe, its’ 96.5-miles (plus loops) give visitors a true appreciation of South East Texas terrain.
The path is relatively smooth and easy, boasting dense woods of pines, magnolias and hardwood trees. It has trails covered in gentle pine needles and a few swamps, small creeks and streams scattered throughout. Lucky hikers may even spot a red-cockaded woodpecker or bald eagle; two endangered species that call the trail home. And, have you seen the movie Wild with Reese Witherspoon? Well, the Lone Star Hiking Trail serves as training ground for thru-hikers hoping to one-day check the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails off their bucket list.
