A Walk in the Woods
Public – Super close to the city and a great getaway! As we approach spring, this is a great park! I love how the Spanish Moss hangs from the trees (and no, it’s not invasive and doesn’t harm the tree), there are tall green grass, palmetto trees, “Viney” trees, and more! So the landscape is not barren and gives you something to look at at every turn. And maybe some wildflowers will start to bloom!

About the trails:
We’ll hike about 4-5 miles on well-maintained, dirt trails with some small hills. Because this park has lots of short trials pieced together, it’s a great one to do with a group who’s been there.
Level of Difficulty: Easy, we’ll go the pace of the group. Probably around 20-23 minute miles. We can stop for photos and water along the way.
What to bring:
- Water
- Sturdy shoes
- Sun Protection
- Bug Protection
- Snack
- Chair for after the hike if you want to hang out.
Dog Friendly for Friendly Dogs – Please do not approach any dogs on leash without getting prior permission from a distance.
Entrance Fees – $5 per day unless you have a state park pass. NOTE: Whether you have a start park pass or not, be sure to reserve your day pass online BEFORE the event. The park might sell out of day passes and then you won’t be able to get in. Reserve a day pass >> here << (https://bit.ly/3txv5Pu )
Where to meet / Parking:
Park in the day-use area near the Nature Center. It’s the very first left turn after you go thru headquarters. Look for the BCO/HTXO signs. Then look for a parking spot in the day-use area. You might have to circle around the camping sites and park in the day-use area on the other side.
How to get there: If driving West, exit I-10 as soon as you can after you cross over the Brazos River. Don’t get off before the Brazos River because the feeder road does not go through. Don’t let the I-10 construction deter you, just research it before and Please allow time to figure out the construction.
