Embark on epic hikes through winding trails that reveal the stunning beauty of the second-largest canyon in the United States. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just starting, there are trails for every skill level. Take in the panoramic vistas, and don’t forget your camera – this place is a photographer’s dream.
When the sun sets, the adventure doesn’t stop. Set up camp under the vast Texas sky and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the canyon. Campfires, stargazing, and the crisp night air create the perfect backdrop for sharing stories with fellow outdoor lovers.

Join us for this trip to Palo Duro Canyon located in the panhandle of Texas. Camp at the state park or stay at a hotel in Canyon. We will hike the Lighthouse and Triassic trails in the canyon. Palo Duro Canyon has been called “The Grand Canyon of Texas,” both for its size and for the dramatic geological features, including the multicolored layers of rock and steep mesa walls similar to those in the Grand Canyon. They also have fantastic biking trails and dark night skies for spectacular star gazing!
TRAILS: There are a few difficult trails, but most are moderate levels. You will need to hike with a minimum of 2.5 liters of water — more for longer hikes.

ARRIVAL: Plan to arrive by 2 pm Friday so there is time to set up and have a short evening hike. Then we have three full days for exploring! Head home Tuesday by noon. Temperatures should be in the 60s during the day and low 40s mid 30s at night.
HACKBERRY ELECTRIC CAMPSITES: We have three sites reserved, and showers/toilets are a short walk. , possibly a covered picnic table, a fire ring (a fire ban may be in place), and a shared potable water spigot.
CAMPERS: Three tents per site. Bring an extension cord & power strip if you want to use electricity in your tent – one per tent, please. 4 person tent or smaller. If you’re unsure if your tent will fit, please discuss with Amy before you leave Houston.
HOTEL: There are many options if you prefer to stay in a hotel in Canyon – about a 20-minute drive. Make your own arrangements and meet us in the morning. Please note there is no consistent cell service in the canyon, so be on time for hikes!
GETTING TO THE PARK: If you want to carpool, please write that in the notes of your reservation. You can also fly into Amarillo and rent a car.
We may have a pre-trip Zoom meeting to discuss camping/hiking gear, the trails, meals, and travel.
FEES: Please read below carefully.
Note, if you’re staying in a hotel, you must make the reservations and payments yourself.

- Tent spots: $115 for 1 person; $60 for 2nd person sharing tent
- Sleeping in car or sprinter van: $$115 for 1 person; $60 for 2nd person sharing car/van
2. Plus Additional Fees: all apply
- Park Entrance Fees: $32 ($8 per day per person unless you have a state park pass.) (State park passes are $70 per year until Sept 1, 2024 and then it increases to $95 a year. It’s still worth it if you do at least 2 trips.)
Hotels:
You book and pay for your own lodging – Please email info@HTXOutdoors.com if you’re booking a hotel so we can add you to the event. You will also have to pay day entrance fees to the state park. To expedite your check-in times each day, please reserve your day passes online. Sign up as a 2nd person below if you want to join the campers for food.
Refunds:
Before Sept 15th – 95%. After Sept 15th no refund unless someone takes your place, then 90%
What you need to bring
Breakfast, lunch and dinner is provided. We’ll have light snacks but since snacks are kinda specific to the group going, please bring your own snacks.
- Cooler for drinks and personal snacks – We do not have community coolers for things you bring.
- Camping chair
- Tent (Ask about borrowing)
- Ground Pad (Ask about borrowing)
- Sleeping bag
- Pillow
- Sunscreen & hat/layers for sun protection
- Bug Spray
- Toiletries (toothbrush, paste, soap)
- Headlamp / light source
- Hiking Boots
- Comfortable shoes for camping
- Layers of clothes
Dogs:
Dog friendly for responsible dog owners: Please do not let your dog run up to people or other dogs without asking.
