Lace up your hiking boots and hit the trails at Lake Somerville State Park! This spot is a hiker’s paradise, where owls call from the post-oak forest and white-tailed deer bound through the tall bluestem grasses. The shady paths and scenic views make every step an adventure. Whether you’re exploring winding trails or soaking in the tranquility of the lake, this park is the perfect place to escape, recharge, and connect with nature. Let’s get moving!

Member Only Information: 

About the Hike

  • Distance: ~7–8 miles
  • Pace: 20–24 minutes per mile.  We’ll hike the pace of the group or split into 2 groups if needed.
  • Trail Features: Moderately challenging terrain, shaded paths, and creek views
  • Hike Type: Out and Backs – There are several out and back trails that we’ll piece together.

This Event is For:

  • All Levels Welcome: We’ll go at the pace of the group.
  • Dog-Friendly: Dogs must remain leashed, with water and waste bags provided by owners. Keep dogs away from other hikers and pets.
  • Members and One Guest per Member

What to Bring

  • Water: At least 2 liters to stay hydrated.  We recommend to fill your hydration pack bladder regardless of size. This helps you prepare for longer hikes and also it’s better to have too much water than not enough.
  • Bug & Sun Protection: Bug spray and sunscreen.
  • Comfortable Shoes: Sturdy hiking shoes suitable for mixed terrain.
  • Snacks: For a quick energy boost.  Bring your lunch and we can stop on trail.
  • For Your Dog: Water and waste bags.

Where to Meet

  • Location: Newman Bottom Parking Lot, Lake Somerville Trailway, Somerville, TX 77879
    • This is very primitive and there may not be cell receptions.  Please download offline maps and plan ahead.  Allow some extra time to find the location.
  • Arrival Time: 9:45 AM (to park, meet the group, and prepare for the hike)
  • Hike Start Time: 10:00 AM (We may leave early if all RSVPs are checked in before then.)

NOTE:  This park is about 1.5 hours from Houston.  Join the campers afterwards to make it even more worth the trip.  Check with RSVPs to carpool.


Tips for Navigation

The parking lot is located at Newman Bottom, and GPS directions are usually accurate. Download offline maps or check directions beforehand to ensure a smooth arrival.


After the Hike

Optional: Go to Rocky Creek Park to hang out with campers.  Kayak, play games, relax in nature.  At sunset well start a campfire.  Pack your dinner and stick around for a day full of adventure.
