Join us after our full moon hike to watch (and photograph) the last total lunar eclipse until 2021 which is being called the “Super Blood Wolf Moon”.

The eclipse starts at 8:36 pm and ends at 1:48 am, but the moon should be in totality by 10:41 pm which is when it should be reddish and eclipsed. Next day is MLK so it might be worth staying up that night if it’s not cloudy and you don’t work on Monday (or even if you do).

Taking photos at night can be both very rewarding and frustrating at times. You need to carry extra gear and you can’t rely completely on the features of your camera since most are made to work better with more light but once you get over that the payoff can be huge.

Come by to get a quick hands-on crash course in night time/low light photography! You would need a moderately advanced camera (it needs to have a manual mode so that you can switch your shutter speed and aperture settings, although some of the more advanced smartphones have apps that can do that so those might be acceptable too). I’ll walk you through some of the basics like getting a correct exposure and focusing at night and we can practice shooting the downtown skyline buildings.

As an added bonus (weather depending) we have the opportunity to shoot the lunar eclipse so I can also walk you through some basics on taking photos of the moon (a zoom lens/camera is better but we can make do with whatever gear you have)

You would also need a tripod to keep your camera steady while shooting and will need to know your gear; I shoot using Nikon cameras so I might be able to help with the settings but don’t know other brands, so you can either be familiar with changing the settings or download a copy of your camera’s manual that you can bring in case we need to figure out how to change some settings.

Once you sign up for the event feel free to contact me if you’re planning on taking photos that night so we can talk about your gear. If you have a camera but no tripod also let me know, you might be able to borrow one of mine during the event.
