Locations

Brantley Lake State Park, New Mexico:

Brantley State Park will be our main campsite for the trip.  It is located 27 miles North of Carlsbad, NM.  It offers camping (developed and primitive sites), boating, fishing, and swimming.

The park has many amenities including restroom with water, showers, toilets, and group picnic facilities.

Our campsite is a developed site.  We will have access to electricity.  Also, there’s a covered picnic table.

New Mexico is an hour earlier than Texas, which means we will gain an hour every time we head back to Texas.  Proximity to Carlsbad assure us several options for diner and stores to resupply.

The average drive for the different locations in the Guadalupe National Park and the Carlsbad Caverns National Park is 1 hour.  Camping in the National Parks is first-come first-served basis.  Considering it is on the Thanksgiving holyday week, the probabilities of finding a spot are very low.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park:

The Guadalupe Mountains National Park protects the world’s most extensive Permian fossil reef, the four highest peaks of Texas, and an environmentally diverse collection of flora and fauna.  The park offers many trails for day hiking, camping (limited spots) and backcountry camping. Probably the highlight of the park is the Guadalupe Mountain Peak- an 8.5 miles round hike to the tallest peak in Texas.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park:

This park offers options for hiking, and self/ranger-guided tours of the many caverns located in the park.  One of the most popular attraction is the hike down 750-feet on the 1.25-mile Natural Entrance trail.
