Backpacking Big Thicket
Let's run off to Big Thicket Natural Preserve... and do a little backpacking in the woods. We will go about 7 miles round trip and set up camp about half way. So, this will still be considered a beginner backcountry camping experience. Please note there will be no running water, showers or toilets. We're roughing it!
We're digging for our toilets... bring your shovels! The park is about a 2.5 hour drive from Houston. I have to tell you there is lots to do in this park & it's beautiful! This will offer you another opportunity to try your new skills or hone your old skills & submerse yourself in nature's splendor with some new/old friends.
Leave that kitchen sink behind... bring necessities (deodorant & a ball cap are always good) & let's go! Big Thicket offers backcountry camping, hiking, bird watching, carnivorous plants (Seriously!), wildflower viewing, mountain bike trails, & the list goes on. So if you are a bird nerd, you love the outdoors, hiking, just getting away from it all, or the gratification of being self sufficient -- then this is for you!
We will be driving to the Turkey Creek Trailhead on FM 420. We'll pick up a couple of backcountry camping permits at the visitor center. Permits are Free & cover 8 people at a time. We'll plan on parking our cars at the trailhead & hike in from there
