Big Bend Adventure

We’ll have four days & nights in Big Bend National Park to explore some of the most scenic country in Texas, heck, the world! We’ll be camping in the group campground in the Chisos Basin. We will have great access to showers, restrooms and all amenities. There’s an abundance of natural riches to explore inside the park and activities include hiking, paddling, rock climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, stargazing, and even a day trip to sunny Mexico. Organized activities will get posted to the BCO calendar as we get closer to the trip date and we’ll also have signup sheets available for each day’s activities, the night before.

Big Bend National Park encompasses more than 800,000 acres in southwest Texas. For more than 1,000 miles, the Rio Grande forms the international boundary between Mexico and the United States; Big Bend National Park administers approximately one-quarter of that boundary. Within the 118 twisting miles that also define the park’s southern boundary, the river’s southeasterly flow changes abruptly to the northeast and forms the “big bend” of the Rio Grande.

Transportation

Transportation will be by carpool. A pre-trip meeting will be posted about a month before the trip to allow people to arrange carpooling. Saturday and Wednesday will be driving days, leaving us Saturday late afternoon – Wednesday morning to enjoy the park. Most folks leave by 7 am from Austin on Saturday morning to drive out there. If leaving from Houston, allow a bit more time.

Meals

The trip cost includes all 11 meals (Saturday dinner; Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Sunday-Tuesday; and a Wednesday morning send-off breakfast). Meals will be prepared in a community kitchen at camp. Everyone will be asked to pitch in with meal preparation, cleaning and camp duties. We will have a sign-up sheet at the pre-trip meeting for this purpose. Bring snacks if you want, and your own adult beverages.

Please email (regina.kubelka@gmail.com) if you have any dietary restrictions. We can accommodate gluten-free and vegetarian diets upon request.

Dining and cooking gear (pots, etc.) will be provided. It’s BYOB for adult beverages. Non-alcoholic beverages like sweet tea will be provided.

Cost

$175 for members (each member must RSVP separately to apply the member discount)

$225 for guests

Pay your $25 deposit here. This deposit is non-refundable but fully transferable up to 60 days out (please do not use BCO credits for this trip). Don’t get left behind, pay your deposit and then pack your bags! Deposit is due by July 24th.

What to Bring

You will need to bring your own personal camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, flashlight, hiking boots, etc). Pack and dress in layers – it can get really cold at night and hot as blazes during the day so pack accordingly. An air mattress or sleeping pad is highly recommended – the ground is hard out there, and ear plugs too – those bears snore pretty loud in West Texas! Bring your passport, if you have one. The automated border crossing is NOW OPEN into sunny Mexico. Take a day trip into the tiny Mexican town of Boquillas.

Bon voyage party

This year we are having a party on the last night of the trip.

Packing list

Click here for a gear checklist. Please note: There is an extreme water shortage in the park. Please consider bringing 3 gallons of your own drinking water.

We have reserved 40 camp spots and do need to fill this up for our hosting partner club, Hill Country Outdoors. If registration is not full by 8/15 we will open it up to our sister clubs. Deposit deadline due July 24th final payment due 8/15.
