Full Moon Hike

We are hiking on an actual trail with hills! This it not a pathed path which makes it interesting when you hike back at night, in the dark!

#optoutside redo

Since we didn’t get to do a full moon hike on Black Friday for #optoutside, we decided to host an #optoutsideredo!  This year, give the gift of an exerience.  Bring your friends and family and let the moon guide you through the woods.

At its sight, this primal side of you might take over. Ever heard of the lunar lunacy effect or the Transylvania effect?

While I am happy to report that no one has transformed at HTXoutdoors on a full moon hike…YET, but we do believe in celebrating its beauty with a nice hike.

About the Trail:

We are hiking on an actual trail with hills!  Yes, right here in Houston!  This it not a pathed path which makes it interesting when you hike back at night, in the dark!

What to bring:

  • Headlamp or light source (the trees get thick so you’ll need it)
  • Water! Stay hydrated. It is also good practice to hydrate before your activity
  • Bug Spray
  • Wear long pants
  • Wear sturdy shoes that are okay to get muddy

After the hike, we’ll pick a place and grab something to eat!

Arrive Early!

We start hiking at 6:45 sharp from the Rugby Fields
With this many people, the hike will be slower than normal. We will go as far as we can.
Expect to walk between 2-4 miles. (we’ll go the pace of the group.)

Parking:

Please read the map below and if you are unsure about where to go, scout it or contact us before the day of the event.

Will we see the full moon?
There is no guarantee that we will see the full moon. If it’s cloudy, we might not see it at all.

Bring a light source
Flash light, head lamp, phone light.  It will be dark but the end of the hike. Bring a source of light.

Water is required!
It is hot. Bring at least 20 oz of water to carry with you on the hike.  There is not water
available at the check in points or during the hike.  Everyone is responsible for bringing their own water.

Friendly, Healthy Dogs Allowed!!
If your dog is friendly, can handle being around large groups of people/other dogs and can handle hiking at night, feel free to bring your dog.  Be sure to bring water for your dog.

Teenage kids and up; no strollers
We are on actual trails, even when people bring the Jeep Strollers, they end up having to carry the stroller in places or they end up turning around.  Not appropriate for small children as the pace tends to be too fast for them to keep up.

What happens if it is raining
We do not cancel before the of the event, and even then, we only cancel if it’s dangerous.
If it is raining a little, we will still go but we will alter the route. Hiking on wet trails
cause erosion and is expensive to fix.  Trails are closed after heavy rains.
We will follow the rules for open / closed trails and adjust the route accordingly.

Leave No Trace

Put any empty bottles or trash in the garbage cans.
Do not throw garbage on the ground. Noone is there to clean up after you.
